What do you think happens when we die?

Writer's picture: Jenna RubinJenna Rubin

There's really no way to know. The thing is much of life is like that too. We run around chasing after answers that don’t exist to questions we made up. What is love? What will make me happy? What's my purpose? A made up question always has a made up response. I will tell you what I think happens when we die. I believe that initially the brain releases a bunch of chemicals that set you into one of the greatest dreams you have ever had. In this dream-like state you are able to accept the fact that you are dying because it is presented so beautifully. After that, I believe consciousness dissolves and it never comes back. What is consciousness other than all the conclusions and observations we have made from our experience?

No experience = no consciousness. At that point I believe your body begins to dissolve and fall apart from the whole into a million small particles and elements. I believe these elements will come back together to form a new life. In a sense I believe the universe just uses us to keep itself alive. The same way that we use food to keep us alive. We live until the universe is hungry for us and that's the end…

Along the way you choose 50% of your beliefs while the other 50% are brainwashed into you from events and people you run into along the way. The decisions you make have a huge impact on your health and view of life. If you had events in your life that made you feel insecure or inadequate perhaps you starve yourself through life, or stress yourself out over trivial things. These decisions start killing your hormones, sleep, clarity and vitality. You blame the people who “made you hate yourself”, but really you fucked your own health up based on the actions you took during a time of hardship.

Maybe you were never good in school and you decided that you were a loser so you just decided to never try anything that would make your life better. Now you're an adult and you feel your life has been worthless, you say it's just who you are, when really it's just what you have chosen to believe. Maybe you saw a movie one time that presented a type of romantic love you admired, and you decided you needed to attain that in real life. You spend all your time trying to find someone who matches the ideal in the movie, while everyone who truly cares about you slips through the cracks…

Death is the end of this game. It's the end of beliefs, ideas, and the shaping of these by experiences and choices. It’s when you become one with the universe, free of thought, free of tragedy and also free of comedy. While living I feel there’s really two ways to see life, and we constantly shift between the two. One is that life is tragic, and the other is that life is hilarious. Shakespeare knew this well. I really don’t believe there is a second chance after this life. It's just this once and then the lights are out…so watch the show folks…sometimes you will laugh about it, and sometimes you will cry about it, and then one day it will be no more. Without an afterlife you have to make the best out of THIS life. There is no life better than this, no moment better than this. We get a long time to be here, and I feel we all knew this concept in kindergarten but somehow the magic of this existence gets lost along the way. We start believing in becoming someone other than ourselves, someone better than ourselves, and it just ruins everything.

My prayer for the world is that we all accept ourselves, accept others, and cherish this life for exactly what it is before the eternal darkness.

I would love to travel the world interviewing individuals on what they believe happens when they die. I have been obsessed with death since I was 12 years old (unfortunately for me, or perhaps one day to be my greatest gift while living). What do you think happens??? I would love to hear your thoughts.
